I was asked by a previous buyer if I would be interested in creating a larger painting with lots of yellow floral. This Canola field came to mind.

I decided to have a long look at my reference photos.

I took these photos last summer with the idea of creating a painting that would feel as if you could walk through the field and into the distance.

The first 3 hours…getting in the basic values and shapes.

I love when the foreground of a painting pulls you in. It is important for me to stop and observe. I ask myself : What is my Intention?

Almost there.

Finished for today. I will look at it over the next few days and make changes if needed.

MARCH 8 2011

i woke up this morning with this painting on my mind….something was not sitting right. Had another long look. I was not happy with the foreground. I realized I had ove worked the canola and lost the front foliage and midtones. I had done exactly what I was afraid I would do and lost my original intention to draw the viewer in and through the Painting I also felt like the background was not cool enough to make the Canola “pop”. So at 6 am I was back in my studio..

I covered the Foliage area with dark Paint and repainted the Mid value green area where needed. I also added cooler colors in back and around the singular canola plants which helped them brighten up and come forward. I then softened the back area to feel more like the morning sunrise. the final touches included detailing the front with some reds and oranges that were intertwined at the base of the canola.

November 8,2010

Trying to get focused again. I have these visuals in my mind over the last several months of much softer images. I am not sure what the subject is. Less color, stronger subject and composition. I will attempt this week again to bring them out of my head and on to the canvas. Did not happen as I had planned on my last attempt. Transitions take time I guess.

I am also going to create several small paintings this week for the Smallworks show at Bluerock Gallery. It starts on November 20th. I enjoyed the process last year.

Heres to a new week and new beginnings!

I am in the process of going back to Oil right now. I have these images in my mind of soft edges and bigger shapes. It is a transition from the fast drying medium of acrylic and my busy mark making. I am slowing myself down; spending more time planning out the execution of my paint. I have not put any of those new pieces on here yet.

I don’t know where I am going….but I am on my way. I am not sure who said that!
